Fishing has been excellent since we got in here this year. Even the days of huge rains only shut it down for awhile. Lots of walleye being caught in the portage lakes. Scott Sheneke group has caught several 27″ walleye and just got back today from the Musky lake where they caught 6. All in the 30s, so nothing big but still 6 is quite a few for a few hours of fishing. Water temp is in the low 60s and the northern are still a little lethargic. They are still shallow, on the warmer north side of bays. Walleye in the main lake have been hard to find lately. Bill Ficken and Dan Dougherty usually do great trolling crawler harnesses but just haven’t found the numbers like usual. The walleye we’ve been getting on the main lake have all been in pretty shallow bays. The walleye in the portage lakes have been wherever you can find gravel pockets on the bottom, the fish seem to be there. Dan and Jon Schantz from Indiana have been doing great on trout. They’ve been coming for years and know every spot on the lake where trout hide. They also explore all the portage lakes that no one else goes to. They are great guests! Usually by this time the lake trout are pouring into the slot in front of camp but due to the weather it’s been a little slow. As the weather warms, there will be more and more migrating into the area by the cabins. Much of the lake hasn’t been touched yet with crooked, bear trap, old camp and the rest of the portage lakes hardly being fished. Most of the fisherman so far have been targeting lakers. Although John Owen and Craig Sesseman Goup caught lots of nice northern, mostly on spoons, and were die hard fisherman, going out in the nastiest of weather. I was impressed.
